The hand that rocks the cradle is arbitrary.
The tigers and lambs, arbitrary. The dogs
and fires, the eggs and goats, arbitrary.
A stitch in time saves something arbitrary.
The deer crossing the road is arbitrary.
The point size and leading is arbitrary.
The right key, the right tempo, the right words,
arbitrary, though music has charms to soothe
the arbitrary. What a Pisces is is arbitrary.
A three-legged dog is the arbitrariness
of God. The road by the lake is arbitrary,
but the desires that draw the insects there
are not quite. The lamp in the lighthouse
is arbitrary — but sailing toward it is not.
