Be mindful of the baseline grid: set it up
but don’t lock to it. In the digital age
letterspacing’s OK: what readers can’t see
won’t distract them. Ligatures are like friends:
kids, too, will understand them. Feathering best
be saved for newsletters and mass markets,
but doing it most judiciously in a trade
such as The Essential Guide to Prescription Drugs
is not all bad so long as it’s inconspicuous.
A clean coded document should account
for ellipses, em dashes, the spacing between
single and double quotes, accents, diacritics,
and art callouts. To lose a page in a tight
chapter in order to make a signature—
don’t use scaling even then—use stealth
kerning and justification, and don't share what you've done.
