Beach pieces

A little sand in the toes
the eyes tired
a pain in the thigh like a slice
of lemon stuck on the end of a glass
do you feel it too
don't let go of my hand
we lie not quite
tanned but lost in the sun

        •

Brown the water curling
up and under
and over our toes
or no that's just the seaweed

        •

The young man in the motorized parachute
gliding past the gull
beyond the arching spiral
under which races
the graying man with outstretched arms
hoping to show them, though no one is watching,
that he still has it.

        •

The boys dig trenches
and make “dark wells.”
The girls dig, too,
collecting shells.
