Shower in the morning, eat throughout the day,
have fun at night. The routine has a mind of its own.
Ray DiPalma knows when it's dark o'clock
as most of us unconsciously do, only
we don't know what happened to the green football.
Either it was in the basket Mom brought
to Goodwill or we left it out in the street —
or the dog ate it. Tomorrow is the day
before yesterday, deal with it. Don't repress
the songs you're too embarrassed to sing.
The laundry is routine; mowing the grass,
ritual. Division of labor has no past.
To get out of a routine, you have to crawl inside
its octopus mind and disconnect the red wire.
